Can I Become a Surrogate?

General

Surrogates need to have US citizenship with legal documentation of US residency. They also must not have a criminal record or live with someone who does.



Health

Surrogates must be between age 21 - 42 with an acceptable BMI and a history of successful, low-risk pregnancies. They also must not be on anxiety or depression medication.



Lifestyle

Surrogates cannot smoke or use drugs, nor can they live with someone who does these things. They also must have a stable support system.



Financial

Surrogacy must not be your primary source of income. All surrogates are required to have some sort of income from either their own job or a partner's.

Does Medicaid cover surrogacy?

Surrogacy‑related medical care -pregnancy, delivery, monitoring, etc. - is not covered for intended parents under Medicare. Coverage for a surrogate’s pregnancy depends on her own insurance, not Medicare. Most surrogates use ACA marketplace plans or employer‑based insurance, or a bridge the gap policy or Lloyd Policy if surrogacy is not covered on the employer- based insurance or not available on the ACA marketplace. How do I become a surrogate?

Do surrogates get paid?

Yes, surrogates do receive compensation and reimbursement for the time, effort, and expenses involved throughout the surrogacy journey. This support ensures they are never financially responsible for any costs related to the process.

Can you be a surrogate after menopause?

Most clinics require surrogates to be between the ages of 21 and 40, though some clinics allow up to 42. Because surrogacy has an upper age limit and menopause typically occurs later in life, many women who have already experienced menopause may not qualify. Eligibility is ultimately determined by the fertility clinic based on overall health, medical history, and safety considerations.

What are the requirements for being a surrogate?

Surrogates must be at least 21 years and no older than 42. They must be a US citizen and possess legal documentation of US residency. In addition, they must have a BMI under 32, must not smoke or live with someone who smokes, must not use drugs or live with someone who uses drugs, and must not have a criminal record or live with someone with a criminal record. In addition, they must have at least one full-term pregnancy with no more than 5 total vaginal deliveries or 2 c-sections. A previous high risk pregnancy may disqualify you as well.

All surrogates are required to disclose their medical, psychological, and legal background. Lying or hiding information will also disqualify you.

Can I be a surrogate for a friend?

Absolutely! Being a surrogate for a friend or family member is a wonderful gift. However, surrogacy is a complex journey even for close relationships. The screenings, legal agreements, and support systems help protect the friendship or family bond and keep the experience positive for everyone involved. It's still extremely important to have an agency work alongside you to ensure all the required steps in the journey are completed and no one is left paying for something that is not needed or where money is wasted.
